Nabarro partner Brian Sher joins Justice Minister Ken Clarke at legal conference in India
4 October 2011
Competition partner Brian Sher joined Justice Minister Ken Clarke, President of the Law Society, and senior representatives of the English Bar at a high profile conference in New Delhi on 26 September.
The conference was supporting the UK's agenda to promote legal liberalisation in India. Brian, the sole UK representative on the panel discussion on
Competition law: lessons from the UK and EU, was joined by the architect of India's new competition policy and a leading Indian practitioner. Ken Clarke and recently appointed Indian Minister of Law & Justice Salman Khursheed both gave keynote addresses.
Competition law is currently one of the hottest topics in India. A prohibitive regime modelled closely on EU competition law was introduced two years ago and India's new merger control regime came into force in June this year.
Ian Binnie, Head of the India Group, commented
"We are always extremely pleased to support the UK government as well as the Law Society and Bar Council in promoting closer ties between the legal professions of our two countries. The development of a comprehensive competition regime is key to avoiding anti-competitive practices in India and reflects the desire of our international clients to work with consistent rules internationally."
