Emphasising its expertise in the waste sector, Nabarro LLP has successfully been appointed by Essex County Council and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to advise on their multibillion pound Essex Waste Partnership private finance initiative (PFI) project.
Overcoming competition from a number of rival firms in the waste sector to secure the appointments, Nabarro will commence work immediately on one of the largest waste PFI projects in the UK for the partnership.
The appointment will see the Nabarro team, including projects partner James Snape and associates Stephanie McDonald and Sima Dad, advise the partnership on its circa £2 billion waste management solution. The project will help the Councils meet their landfill diversion obligations and make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gasses such as methane.
Mark Fallows, Principal Solicitor at Essex County Council, commented: "We are delighted that Nabarro was reappointed given the advice and support we've received to date, the firm is a recognised leader in this sector and we are looking forward to working with the team.”
Commenting on the appointment, James Snape said, “Carbon reduction commitment has been an increasing factor in the news agenda for months and local authorities all over the country are addressing ways in which they can reduce their carbon footprint and cut emissions of other greenhouse gases. Essex and Southend are two authorities that consider, amongst other factors, their environmental impact as important, and we are delighted to work with them in making the best use of technology to successfully address their waste and climate change strategies.”
The Nabarro team has an extensive portfolio of waste clients, and has established itself as a dominant legal player in the sector, advising five out of the eight main waste companies in the UK, including longstanding clients Biffa and Shanks Group. The firm is also acting on 12 PFI waste projects with a capital value of over £2 billion.
