31 March 2010
Nabarro LLP has advised Aviva Investors Pensions Limited on obtaining planning permission on appeal for a 10-storey, 111 guest room hotel at Regal House adjacent to Twickenham Station, from the Secretary of State.
Aviva Investors entered into a development agreement with Travelodge to construct the hotel, for approximately £6 million. This latest high profile development will involve the iconic Regal House being extended towards Twickenham railway station. The new hotel will be the first development to come forward in a cluster of tall buildings planned for the Twickenham Station area.
The redevelopment secures payments of £75,000 to reinvigorate the public realm close to the development, and transport infrastructure in Twickenham Town Centre.
Richmond Council refused to grant planning permission for the redevelopment in June 2009. Aviva Investors appealed to the Secretary of State and evidence was heard by a planning inspector in January 2010 during a five day Public Inquiry.
Planning partner, Joshua Risso-Gill led the Nabarro team, assisted by Associate, Nicola Insley and Trainee, Lucinda Reid. The London Borough of Richmond was advised by Appeals Officer, Sukie Tamplin.
Commenting on winning the appeal, Joshua said: "We are delighted to have assisted Aviva Investors to obtain planning permission for this significant development in Twickenham. The hotel's exemplary design will complement the existing office building, Regal House, and provide much needed tourist accommodation in suburban west London. This success was a real team effort involving Richard Phillips QC of Francis Taylor Buildings, Turley Associates (planning and urban design), Dexter Moren Associates (architects) and Travelodge producing evidence on the need for, and benefits of, a hotel in this highly sustainable location."
