Regeneration experts welcome Sheffield’s Enterprise Zone as re-balancing economy away from South East

24 March 2011

Leading regeneration experts are hailing the Government’s announcement today of an Enterprise Zone in Sheffield as a major boost for the Sheffield City Region.

Jackie Sadek, chief executive of UK Regeneration, said: “The return of the Enterprise Zone has to be welcomed by anyone who cares about Yorkshire’s economy. It will help rebalance the economy away from London and the South East. It’s gratifying to see some substance is being put on David’s Cameron’s promise to do this.”

Nabarro construction partner Martin McKervey agreed that Yorkshire needs to prevent the capital grabbing all the attention: “There was a danger that London could suck all the oxygen out of the local economy and the Enterprise Zone will help us tip the balance back in our favour, building on the recent creation of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.

“This is another vote of confidence for the Sheffield City Region. The private sector needs to play a major part in taking this region’s economy forward and the Enterprise Zone will attract businesses that will benefit from the tax breaks and the relaxed approach to planning.

“Other regions – including London – will have EZs too, so it’s now up to us to make ours deliver the regeneration and wealth creation that is so vital to the region.
